P.S… ive built 454’s 427’s and many other motors,.. and ive only got to 850hp before… i just dont see how it’s possible to get that much power and stay street legal
i know you can add NOS but i dont think thats gona get you that much power

A: Back in my high school days there was a guy who was WELL known for his outlandish B*** S*** stories. ONE was how his dad had a custom street rod in the garage that was worth gazillions of dollars, but it was always “in the shop” or in storage whenever we asked to see it.

I guess every group of people has one of those liars.

Q: What are the dimensions of the racing stripes for the 68 camaro?
My husband is going to put racing stripes on a 68 camaro and he thinks the rear stripes are farther apart than the front but he isnt sure. I googled dimensions and couldnt find anything thought I’d ask here see if anyone knew before he shoots it.

A: I BELIEVE THEY WERE 4 INCHES APART ON THE SS MODELS.. BUT I WOULD DO SOME MORE CHECKING FIRST..

Q: where can i find the cheapest and easiest disc brake conversion kit for a 68 camaro?
I need to fix my 68 camaro but i don’t need original parts. I just need cheap, easy, and clean parts. Body fenders and lights and other front end parts. But first i need new brakes while it’s easy access.

A: The best and sort of inexpensive brake conversions can be found at speedway motors. Search web for “speedway motors”. If you don’t see them on line, order their catalog. It’s full of tips about building race cars and street rods.

Q: Where can i find performance parts for my 68 camaro?
Where can i find custom dashes and pedals and other parts for my 68 camaro? I am not looking for original parts, i am looking for custom performance parts that preferrably are bolt ons but not a must.

A: Some places to start are listed below. Also looking the back of car magazines, like Hot Rod, Car Craft, Chevy, Camaro etc for the ads of their advertisers and their parts suppliers.

Ebay is another good place to look, patience and diligence is helpful when using ebay since there is so much in there. Find someone who is selling similar parts for your type of car and ask them a question about finding exactly what you may be looking for. There’s always Summit and Jeg’s too.

It’s a Chevy, parts aren’t that hard to find, you just gotta look! I own Mopars and those are a real pain to find parts for!

Q: Where can I sell a 302 MO 68 CAMARO ENGINE?
I have a 302 MO 68 Camaro engine for sale, it has been covered for 20+ years. Looks in excellent condition. The pistons look new, like if its was never fired. I’m in Cincinnati OH.
Any suggestions?

A: have a garage sale

Q: Should I strip 68 Camaro down to bare metal?
My wife’s 68 Camaro is my first ever restoration. It has significant rust requiring replacement of quarter panels and brand new sheet metal for entire front end. I have replaced the front end already. For the rest of the car that is not getting new metal, it has about three layers of paint, which has fish-eyed pretty bad. I want to strip it down to bare metal, removing old filler and rust, using new high quality filler and primer on top of bare metal. Wife does not want me to do that. She wants me to sand, primer on top of existing paint and apply new paint. For the experienced autobody guys, please tell me if this is ok. Or if it will cause problems later with the new paint.
Front of car is not the issue. It is all brand new Goodmark fenders, hood and core support. I am only talking about the rest of the car, the uni-body, i.e, roof, sail panles, tail end, trunk area, etc.

A: yes, strip it. their is noting worse than dropping a ton of money into a paint job to only have it a year later blister from lack of prep. No repitable painter will even paint over three layers of paint. If the car is sitting with bare metal panels right now you should have them sealed ASAP. finger prints and condensation cause rust on a microscopic scale, this can show up in your paint down the line.

Q: Does anyone know a website where I can find out how to install / buy a complete stereo system for a 68 camaro?
Hey there, I just need to install a new complete stereo system in my 68 camaro, does anybody know a website where it lists what size speakers, etc ,etc I need to get , and maybe even how to install all of it, THANKS!

A: I don’t know of any websites that will go that far back, but I may be able to assist. As for the radio, any DIN size radio will work, but you may have to cut the dash to get it in. Your factory radio in the Camaro is likely a shaft style radio. As for the speakers, you should have 6×9 speakers in the rear. As for speakers in the front, I cannot recall off hand for certain what size they are, but I think they may be 4″. Best bet is to probably access them and check for yourself (seeing as you will be replacing them anyways).

Q: How to tell the difference between 68 Camaro & 68 Firebird (disguised as a Camaro)
As many car hunters may have seen, some people have converted Firebirds into Camaros. All it really takes is maybe an engine swap, and some NOS sheet metal, and your Firebird is now a Camaro “clone”. And, as you may have already known, Camaros are worth a lot more than Firebirds of the same year.

I myself am looking at 1st gen Camaros, particularly the 1968 model.

Here’s my question:

Is there a way to tell the difference between a 1968 Camaro and a 1968 Firebird (Camaro “clone”) via VIN or Cowl tags?

I’ve seen pics of Firebirds that are identical to their Camaro cousins, but there must be a way to tell the difference aside from the aesthetics of the car.

Just asking so I don’t get ripped off buying a Camaro that’s really a Firebird.

Thanks!

A: Get the vin number from the plate on the bottom drivers side corner of the dash as it isn’t hard to replace the ones on the doors and make sure this one matches the door plates. The first 2 digits on a camaro vin will be 12 but on a firebird it will be 22 also the 7th digit is the model year it will be 7=1067 8=1968 and 9-1969 hope this helps ps get on the internet and look for 1st gen camaro site there are a bunch of them and the have alot of useful info try (http://www.chevy-camaro.com) also make sure the vin matches the car (engine, coupe-convert., and year)

Q: What is a good diff to put in a 68 Camaro running a 454?
I have a standard diff running 3.7 gears. A little confused on options for a strong diff that is, preferrably, GM.

A: Gm 12-volt

Q: I have to jump start my 68 camaro why would it not start normal?
it all ready has new battery and alternator?

A: Sounds like it could be a burnt park/neutral safety switch, if it is an automatic.
What else have you tested? It could be the P/N safety switch is out of adjustment.
Could be someone forgot to hock up a fusible link wire on the starter. I’d test for battery voltage at the main terminal of the alternator. Then I’d test for voltage at the red wire in the 2 wire plug-in on the side, the other wire is white. With the key on there should be battery voltage at that wire. If not the fusible link at the starter main terminal was not reconnected or the link is burnt. If all wires are connected and battery voltage is present at the starter main terminal, check the links by back probing the wire about 12 inches up from the terminal. There should be 2 fusible links.
Hope this helps get your bow-tie running. Good luck. Christopher

Q: What is original to a 68 camaro convertible ss?
I know of a special hood and hood louvers red stripping on tires special emblems on grille fenders and special gas cap
is there any thing else?

A: This site is all you need:

http://www.camaros.org/index.shtml

It’s one of the best sites of ANY car . . . and I HATE Chevys!

Please keep in mind that anyone can put louvers and badges on a Camaro. Aside of some data plate coding that may be included on some cars depending on what factory it was built, the only full proof way otherwise is through documentation.

Q: What is the fuel economy for a 68 Camaro?
I was going to buy one, and just wondered the MPG highway and city. Thank you.
V8 carb., 4 speed manual, I use gas a lot

A: Depends on condition/health of the engine.

Depends on which engine it is.

Depends on which transmission.

Depends on your driving style.

All of which, you didn’t provide.

Q: Steering in 68 Camaro is loose. What could it be?
The steering is really loose in my 68 Camaro. It is not where the steering wheel connects, that is tight. I am taking it in to be looked at, but would like some idea of what might be the problem. My sister said the steering gear box needs a wedge adjustment, but I am not really sure she knows what she is talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have had all the front end work done – so it isn’t the idler arms or anything like that.

A: Usually this is a very easy fix. You have a re-circulating ball and sector steering box on the lower left hand side under the hood. Directly on top of the steering box you will see a hex jam nut with a threaded shaft in the center. Directly in the center of the threaded shaft is a hex opening for an Allan Wrench. Turn the hex jam nut counterclockwise a couple of turns. Turn the hes threaded part clockwise 1/2 turn and check the slop with someone turning the wheel 30 degrees slowly in both directions. If your hands and arms are long enough put your right hand on the shaft going into the steering box and the left hand down to the steering arm that comes out of the steering box.

For final fine adjustments jack up the car till you can get jack stands under both frame rails near the lower A arms.
Take small adjustments as it’s easy to get it too tight and it’ll ruin the steering box.

Good luck to ya,

Q: How can i run my 68 camaro without its as tank?
i had to take the tank off because it rusted inside, how can i start up my car now without a tank, not to drive just to start it?, is it possible that i an just put the tube that went into the tank in a bucket of gas?

A: A gallon can of gas on the floor & a hose from the fuel pump to the can, but I think the bucket is a bit too risky…

Q: How do I tell a 68′ Camaro RS/SS from any other Camaro just by looking at the body?
The VIN only tells that it was a Chevrolet Camaro with a V8 nothing else.

A: The SS is a performance option ( Bigger HP motor , 12 bolt rear) There is no way to tell between this and a normal coupe.as it was just an add on to a base coupe. The RS is an appearance package. On an RS car it should have hideaway headlights and the backup lights should be in the panel below the rear bumper- Without the RS package they are in the taillights.
1968 Vin and Trim tags offer no info to help you determine RS or SS options.
